Dive Socorro islands - Giant pacific manta rays, Whale sharks, dolphins, Tuna, Hammerhead sharks and the list is endless!
The wild, remote and exhilarating Socorro Islands, Mexico are famous for their big animal encounters.
The area is famous for close encounters with the Giant Pacific manta ray, which can grow to 22 feet across. Divers will also see many species of shark and several hammerhead cleaning stations. Whale sharks can be found between November - December and late April - May.
Pods of wild bottlenose dolphin are encountered on a regular basis, and from January – March the islands are home to a large population of humpback whales that visit the islands to breed and calve. Divers also frequently see extremely large tuna (the world record yellowfin is from these waters), wahoo, large schools of jacks and endemic tropicals found nowhere else in the world.
The Socorro Islands are a group of 4 islands in the Pacific known as the Revillagigedo Archipelago. Socorro and Roca Partida are the most popular for diving, accompanied by San Benedicto and Clarión. The islands lie 240 miles (386km) southwest of Cabo San Lucas in Baja, Mexico, and are often called Mexico's "Little Galapagos" due to their unique ecosystem and attraction of large pelagic animals.
The only way to visit Socorro is by liveaboard. There are no hotels on any of the islands of the Revillagegidos and they are much too remote for daytrips from the mainland. In fact the journey from the southern tip of the Baja Peninsula takes over 24 hours.
We will be diving on the Southern Sport Socorro liveaboard.
MV Southern Sport is one of the diving charter vessels from the renowned local operators, Club Cantamar, among the first names in Mexico liveaboards. This 115ft / 35m aluminum-hulled motor yacht splits its time between the magnificent Socorro Island region and the unforgettable shark mecca of Guadalupe Island. It is renowned for its great crew teamwork.
Accommodating 18 guests in comfort, MV Southern Sport's main deck has an air-conditioned saloon with TV, DVD and music, plus a library of movies and books for your entertainment. The connecting dining area is where you will be served your meals and complimentary beverages: both soft drinks as well as beer and wine. This is the social hub of the boat together with the shaded area of the sundeck which features comfortable, in-built surround seating and a barbecue station.
You will appreciate features such as the 2 Yamaha inflatable dive tenders, scuba tanks of 10, 12 and 15 liters, nitrox, hot and cold showers and a toilet on the dive deck, for those urgent post-dive moments! Southern Sport's emphasis on safety is evidenced by the boat's stability in the water, and the provision of individual lost diver devices, mandatory dive insurance on all its liveaboard charters and a re-compression chamber on board its sister ship Sea Escape. Photographers will note the dive deck's camera table and camera rinse tank, as well as the many charging points around the liveaboard vessel.
So if safety, comfort, service, a boat full of facilities and an operator of good reputation are all on your Mexican liveaboard wishlist, be a sport and enjoy the southern hospitality of M/V Southern Sport.
This will be an amazing adventure, so if you are keen to dive with manta's, sharks, whales, dont miss this trip!
