Dive Tweed Heads, NSW - A hidden treasure!
Tweed Heads offers many beautiful dive sites!
Cook Island is the dive site that stands out the most. Indeed, it has become the most popular dive site for diving Tweed Heads. Cook Island is a nature reserve situated approximately 600 metres off the coast from Fingal Head. The dive site is home to a variety of marine species, from tropical fish to the majestic grey nurse shark. Additionally, the rocky reef provides a reserve for many endangered species of cod, gropers and not to mention the large population of birds that nest on the island. Importantly, dive Cook Island any time of the year and enjoy the wonders of this perfect dive site.
Nudibranchs are another entrancing species that steal the show at Cook Island. Indeed, the site is popular among underwater photographers who come visit from around the world to test their macro skills. However, if Nudibranchs are not your thing, the turtles will also keep you entertained for the 45 minute double dive.
Cook Island was known as Turtle Island and it won’t take you long to see why! Green and Loggerheads will be the main attraction during your double dive and surface interval.
Nine Mile Reef, off Tweed Heads, has a reputation among locals as being a “sharky” spot. All year long, a good population of wobbegongs call the reef home, but are joined by leopard sharks in summer and grey nurse sharks in winter. But other shark species drop in from time to time, including bull sharks, bronze whalers and even the occasional hammerhead. The top of the reef sits at about 10 metres deep, dropping to 30 metres with the drop-off covered in numerous hard and soft corals. Reef fish are scattered across the shallower parts, with pelagic fish, sharks, turtles, stingrays, eagle rays and the occasional manta ray circling the reef.
